Small craft certification
CIN (Craft Identification Number) means an identification number of a small craft hull, the requirements for which are referred to in ISO 10087:2006 ISO standard. In the previous version of ISO 10087:1996 standard it was called HIN (Hull Identification Number). In some sources such term as MIC (Manufacturer Identification Code) may be encountered.
The availability of CIN code on the hull is a certification confirmation of small craft and protects the manufacturer and consumer form the counterfeit. СIN reflects the place, date of construction, model and serial number of small craft. This code is unique for each individual craft!
The absence or damage to the CIN plate most likely indicates that the vessel is old enough, not certified or has been in a serious accident and undergone repair, or even has been stolen.
In compliance with the requirements of clause 1.3.4.12.2 of part I of “The Rules of the classification and construction of ships”, of 2010 edition, ISO standard 10087-2006 “Small craft. Identification of a ship. Coding system”, each craft shall be marked with identification number – CIN code, which is assigned by the national classification society.
CIN code structure for drawing on a small craft hull, in compliance with ISO 10076-2006 standard has such a format:
UA – ABC – 00001 – F – 2 – 13
UA- | Country-manufacturer | First two signs (first grade), after which a hyphen comes, describe the country’s code, where small craft has been constructed. The code of a country-manufacturer is defined in compliance with ISO 3166 standard (UA for Ukraine) |
ABC | Manufacturer identification | The next three signs (second grade) define the unique code of the manufacturer’s identification, which is determined by the Register. Any company, recognized by the Register and having the valid certificate on the conformity with the requirements of the Ukrainian shipping Register, may be a manufacturer. If contractors are available at the enterprise during small craft construction, the second grade of an identification number is assigned to an enterprise that registers the identification number. The unique code assigned to the manufacturer is never repeated. |
00001 | Serial number | The next five signs (third grade) define the serial number of small craft |
F | Month of construction | The next sign (fourth grade) defines the month of the construction that shall be coded respectively: A-January, B-February, C-March, D-April, E-May, F-June, G-July, H-August, I-September, J-October, K-November, L-December |
2 | Year of construction | The next sign (fifth grade) defines the year of ship construction. The year is marked with the last figure of the year of built (for instance 2012 – figure 2) |
13 | Model year | The year of the model indicates when a vessel is planned for sale. The year of model means twelve months period, during which the ship is planned to be sold. The vessel defined for a model year may be constructed during the previous calendar year. Model year is marked by the last two figures of the planned year. |
The Rules for drawing CIN symbols, their size and arrangement on a small craft hull is defined in compliance with chapter 4 and clauses 5.1 and 5.3 of 10087:2006 ISO standard.
Since December 1, 2012 in the course of small craft construction under the technical supervision of the Ukrainian shipping Register, CIN code on the hull is mandatory, with the exception of vessels, constructed prior to 01.12.2012.
Knowing CIN, the singularity of small craft may be verified in doubtful cases (i.e/ that she was built under the technical supervision of the Ukrainian Shipping Register) or request the information regarding the vessel from a manufacturing company.
Validity verification of a small craft construction, under the technical supervision of the Ukrainian Shipping Register, may be carried out by a consumer during the entry of the small craft hull identification number (CIN) or the number of the issued certificate on the Register site by the following parameters: manufacturing company, technical data, place, date of built, model and the serial number of small craft.
